Firework Night
Is your cat or dog scared of firework night?
Not all cats and dogs are afraid of firework night but for those pets that are this time of year can be a real nightmare for them.
The key is not to react or comfort them when they are shaking and showing symptoms of fear, but that is easier said then done when you see your pet upset.
There are some ways to help your pet when the fireworks are going off but remember though, not all pets are the same and some of these methods may or may not help but you can only give them a try.
- Close all doors and windows. Shut the curtains and turn up the television or radio to drown out the noise.
- Walk your dog during the day and make sure your cat is in the house before it gets dark.
- If your pet wants to hide let them. Trying to coax him/her out may only cause them to think there is something to be scared of and may cause them more stress.
- Try using a dap diffuser which is plugged into your wall and contains dog appeasing pheromone. There is a version for cats named Feliway. Please ensure you start to use this at least 2 weeks before.
- Also there is a nutritional supplement called Zylkene which is a natural product for cats and dogs. Its made from a lactose free milk protein and helps calm your pet.
- Desensitisation CDs are available that have images, noises of large fireworks displays and other loud bangs which is supposed to help your pet get used to the noise, but these need to be used over a long period of time and need your commitment to play them everyday.
It can be a difficult time of year for pet owners with cats and dogs who are afraid of fireworks. Its not nice to see your pet go through it. Although fireworks night is suppose to be on the 5th November it seems to go on for about 2-3 weeks. We don't want to spoil peoples fun but be sensible and follow the firework code and remember it is illegal to let off fireworks after 11pm.
With some of the above methods we hope your pets can have a stress free time.
If you would like something you can have to hand over this period to give you more advice then you can print out this Firework Night leaflet.
